Once again, Linus Ullmark is caught up in trade rumors, this time being linked to the New Jersey Devils, a team in desperate need of a number-one goaltender.
Using NHL 24 Franchise Mode, we acted as Tom Fitzgerald and crafted up a deal to acquire Ullmark from the Boston Bruins. The deal we made would have Devils fans with pitchfork signs asking for Fitzgerald’s firing.
New Jersey absolutely should not give up as much as we did. However, GMs need to be willing to potentially overpay when you’re dealing for a stud starting netminder like Ullmark. Dawson Mercer is a pending RFA. Could he be a trade chip for the Devils in their pursuit for Ullmark? And, would you be okay with dealing away the versatile forward if you’re a New Jersey fan?
Alternatively, should Boston continue to ride their dynamic goaltending tandem for one more season before Ullmark’s contract expires? Or Boston fans, are you fully on board with trading him out, giving Swayman his pretty payday, and using the extra salary cap room to improve the forward core?
I propose the trade we discussed, sending a first-round pick, former first-rounder Chase Stillman, and goalie prospect Tyler Brennan. Personally, that seems like a fair deal for a starting and former Vezina goaltender.
The Devils probably aren’t looking to trade away any roster players as they want to be competitive and get back into the playoffs for 2024-25. Fitzgerald may have to bite the bullet and move that No. 10 pick in the upcoming draft if he wants to land Ullmark.
