Referees are an important part of hockey games, and being able to step into the role of one would be an exciting experience.
Listen, a hockey referee has important responsibilities. They are tasked with assigning penalties, conducting face-offs at the start of each period and after goals, and are also obligated to start and stop plays for various reasons.
The general belief is that the best referees minimize their presence, stepping in only when necessary. However, let us be honest: hockey is an emotional game, and referees contribute to the overall atmosphere in more ways than one.
A penalty against the home team up 3-2 with 5:00 left in the game? Surely that gets fans on edge, and those in attendance also demonstrate their displeasure with a ruckus of boos across the arena. You’d find similar reactions to bad calls or cheers when a call favors the home team.
Evidently, referees are an important part of the game and contribute in so many different ways. Being able to step into the role of a referee would be an interesting and fun experience, especially if backed by various storylines and objectives.
No NHL video game has allowed players to step into the role of a hockey referee. Whether that becomes a possibility someday remains to be seen. That said, as a feature never explored, Be a Referee would bring excitement and curiosity.
