In NHL 23, EA Sports introduced two new strategies, 1-3-1 powerplay, and 1-1-2 penalty kill setups. Users could also assign specific roles to players on the powerplay: Distributor, Finisher, and Puck Carrier. These features added additional layers of strategy differentiation for users.
Generally, the new strategy features were well-received by the chel community. However, like anything else, there is room for improvement.
NHL 13 had another feature, Create a Play. Self-explanatory, the feature allowed users to create and set up plays in all areas of the ice. Although the feature appeared to be taken positively, it did not last long.
There are multiple reasons why EA should seriously consider returning Create a Play.
Firstly, it promotes creativity. Currently, users learn how to exploit AI movements based on how they are programmed. While the ability to manipulate AI in specific ways is nice, it also means predictability and gamers playing the same way, which can get boring. Thus, creating plays can encourage users to play differently from each other and promote an overall more enjoyable experience.
Secondly, creating a play would ensure AI characters reach their intended spots. This is particularly important, as users are responsible for all players on the ice. Nothing is more frustrating for users than having a play in mind, but knowing the AI is programmed to go to a spot slightly different than intended. Being able to create plays ensures AI characters are not out of position as frequently. This is particularly crucial for breakout and offensive zone setups.
Thirdly, the ability to create plays provides more space for competitive 1v1 eSport players to be strategic ahead of big matches. Going up against a particular opponent? A competitive eSports player would utilize this feature to develop the right game plan, which includes formulating plays designed against opponent weaknesses. This takes competitive chel to a whole new level.
Whether EA returns Create a Play remains to be seen. However, community members will have mixed opinions on many topics or areas of the game, but this is not one. Create a Play was a feature well received, and it always will be.
