Sam Reinhart and Owen Tippett should get overall bumps

Sam Reinhart and Owen Tippett should get overall bumps

Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports - Five Right Wingers Who Deserve an Overall Increase in NHL 24

After a few hours of scavenging through all 32 teams' rosters in NHL 24, I've compiled a list of players who, through their performance to date, have warranted them an extra look at their overalls in the game. I've broken it up by position, and we start at right wing.

Owen Tippett, Philadelphia Flyers - SNP

    2023-24 season: 46gp, 18 goals, 30 points
Career high: 27 goals, 49 points in 2022-23

When Philadelphia traded former captain Claude Giroux back in 2022, Owen Tippett, along with a first-round pick, were the focal points of the return they got. 10th overall pick in 2017 for Florida, he struggled to elevate himself up their lineup during his time in the sunny city. However, Flyers head coach John Tortorella appears to have unlocked Tippett's potential after setting career highs last year, and is now on pace for a 30-goal campaign.

He's having another terrific season, and that spin-o-rama that you see above is just one of a few highlight-reel goals Tippett has scored this season. It appears with every passing game, his confidence grows more and more. He has received a +1 to his overall since release, but he has proven that with his goal-scoring prowess, he deserves another.

Sam Reinhart, Florida Panthers - PLY

    2023-24 season: 45gp, 33 goals, 57 points
Career high: 33 goals, 82 points in 2021-22

Sam Reinhart has already gone up from 86 to 88 overall since release, but you could argue that he should not be three overall lower than William Nylander. Reinhart has already matched his career high in goals and is on pace for 50+ goals and 100 points. Sam has scored the second most goals in January, behind Elias Pettersson. Also, his nine game-winning goals lead the league. What does his next contract look like?

Reinhart's player in the game should see other changes. His primary position is a center in the game, and right wing is the secondary. While he does take faceoffs on the right side of the ice, his primary position should be right wing as, during gameplay, he assumes winger assignments. He's also listed as a playmaker but should be a sniper.

Brock Boeser, Vancouver Canucks - SNP

    2023-24 season: 46gp, 27 goals, 46 points
Career highs: 29 goals in 2017-18 and 56 points in 2018-19

There are a few players in the game that Boeser should be the same overall but isn't. Travis Konecny, Carter Verhaeghe, and Jordan Kyrou are all 87 overall. Boeser is 86. The Vancouver Canucks sniper is on pace for his best statistical season and plays on one of the best first lines in the NHL at the moment.

There is also the possibility that Boeser is now hitting the prime years of his career as he turns 27 next month, and we are seeing that this year. Boeser, like Reinhart, has already received a +2 boost to his overall since release, so chances are he may not get another, but he was an 87 overall in NHL 22 and 23.

Yegor Sharangovich, Calgary Flames - TWF

    2023-24 season: 46gp, 19 goals, 32 points
Career high: 24 goals, 46 points in 2021-22

Sharangovich has had his overall in recent NHL games go up and down.

I found it interesting that his overall went down in November, but after looking at his start to the season, I understood why. Sharangovich started the season with three goals and six points in his first 18 games. Since the Nov. 21/23 roster update, he has scored 16 goals in 28 games and has eight goals in January.

Sitting second on Calgary in goals and tied for the most shorthanded points in the league. It's safe to say that he has made his case to have his overall readjusted up to 82 or even 83. Like Reinhart, Sharangovich should have his primary position in the game as right wing. He has only taken 79 faceoffs this year, and he's been predominantly a winger during his tenure in Calgary.

Gustav Nyquist, Nashville Predators - SNP

    2023-24 season: 46gp, 24 assists, 36 points
Career high: 54 points in 2014-15

What a signing the 34-year-old Swedish winger has turned out to be in Nashville for Barry Trotz. He is producing at a rate that would surpass his career high in points that he set back in 2014-15 playing for Detroit when he was a 25-year-old and in his first full NHL season.

He sits fourth in points on Nashville while riding shotgun on their top line with fellow veterans Ryan O'Reilly and Filip Forsberg. The Preds have been a competitive team this year with many thanks to their free-agent signees and will be battling for a wildcard spot. Spanning from NHL 20-23, Nyquist was an 84 overall and was as high as an 87 back in NHL 16 and 17. I wouldn't bump him as high as an 87, but back to an 84 seems fair.
