

Finnish center Joonas Kemppainen, 36, has retired, according to Finnish website Kaleva.
The article is behind a paywall, but its subhead reads: “Joonas Kemppainen admits that his body would have allowed him to play for a few more seasons. However, his mind decided that it was time to step aside.”
Kemppainen has not played all season. He had 37 points in 67 Liiga regular-season and playoff games for Kärpät Oulu last season.
Born in Kaajani, Finland and a product of the Hokki club, Kemppainen turned pro with Ässät in Pori before moving on to Jukurit, HPK and finally Kärpät, where he had his greatest success in Finland. In all, Kemppainen had 264 points in 657 Liiga games over 11 seasons.
After back-to-back 31- and 32-point seasons, he was chosen to represent Finland at the 2015 IIHF World Championship and was signed to a contract by the Boston Bruins. Kemppainen spent the 2015-16 season in North America, recording five points in 44 NHL games with Boston and five more points in 11 AHL games with the Providence Bruins.
Kemppainen spent the next six seasons in Russia, playing for Sibir Novosibirsk, Salavat Yulayev Ufa and SKA St. Petersburg, recording 195 points in 379 KL regular-season and playoff games.
Internationally, Kemppainen played in two U-18 World Championships, one World Junior Championship, two World Championships and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
