American forward Chris Brown, 34, has decided to end his playing career, according to the website of his latest team, Fehérvár AV19, the lone Hungarian club in the Austrian-dominated ICEHL.
The announcement came after Fehérvár was swept by defending champion Red Bull Salzburg in the ICEHL quarterfinals.
For Fehérvár this season, Brown had 33 points in 48 regular-season games, four points in seven playoff games and one point in five Champions Hockey League games.
Born and raised in Flower Mound, Tex., Brown was a member of the U.S. National Team Development Program for two seasons and then played three years for the University of Michigan Wolverines, making it to the NCAA championship game in 2011.
Brown was drafted in the second round, 36th overall, by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2009. In 2012, he signed with the Coyotes and over the next four seasons played 23 NHL games for the Coyotes and Washington Capitals, scoring two goals and adding one assist with 21 penalty minutes.
In 2016, Brown was traded to the New York Rangers but he never played in the NHL with that team. After spending the entire 2016-17 season with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, he spent the remainder of his career in Europe.
Brown spent most of his European career in Germany for the Iserlohn Roosters, Nuremberg Ice Tigers and Schwenninger Wild Wings but he also played half a season for Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia before finishing his career this season in Hungary, where his teammates included fellow ex-NHLer Cameron Gaunce.
Internationally, Brown won a gold medal playing for the USA at the 2009 IIHF U-18 World Championship in Fargo, N.D. and also played at the 2011 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.
