In the first game of the 2024 Men's Final Olympic Qualifying Group D on Thursday, Hungary dressed 16-year-old Domán Szongoth.

It was the youngster's second game for the national team – in the first, a pre-tournament exhibition game against Ukraine, he scored a goal. In Thursday’s 5-2 loss to Kazakhstan, he scored another goal.

“He’s never played against men before,” said Hungarian head coach Gergely Majoross. “He’s played under-18 and this is going to be his first junior year in Finland, but we think there’s a lot of potential in him and I thought, ‘Why wouldn’t I take a young kid and show to the rest of the world that we have a player like this?’”

Szongoth plays for Finnish club KooKoo and, as Majoross said, is expected to play in Finland’s top under-20 league this season.

In the interview, Szongoth compares himself to Aleksander Barkov and says that he thinks every day about the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, which is when he’ll be eligible. Only six Hungarians have ever been drafted, and none since János Vas in the second round by the Dallas Stars in 2002.
