Czech defenseman Andrej Šustr will no longer play for Dynamo Pardubice by mutual agreement, the Extraliga club announced on Sunday.
“Andrej is a fair and honest player,” said Pardubice sports director Petr Sýkora. “He has proven himself to be a professional with an excellent work ethic. Unfortunately, it wasn’t perfect here, which was felt on both sides. I’m glad that we were able to talk things out and agree on a solution. I wish Andy the best of luck in his future endeavors and thank him for his services to Dynamo.”
Šustr signed a one-year contract with Pardubice back in July – one of several big-name free-agents the Czech club signed in the off-season. After dominating the Extraliga regular season in 2023-24 but losing game seven of the finals on home ice in overtime, it was thought that a defenseman of Šustr’s size (6’7”, 216 lbs) would be a valuable addition, particularly in the playoffs.
In 12 games Extraliga games this season, Šustr scored one goal with three assists, had 37 penalty minutes and was a plus-2. Pardubice sits atop the Extraliga standings with 37 points. He also had five assists in six Champions Hockey League games, although Pardubice failed to advance to the playoffs.
“I would like to thank the fans for the great atmosphere at all the games, home and away, and also all my teammates for the past three months,” said Šustr. “I also thank management for the opportunity to play here and a fair approach. We talked through everything and said goodbye on good terms. That’s how hockey is. I wish Pardubice a lot of success in the years to come.”
As for where Šustr might end up, his hometown club, HC Plzeň, is last in the league with just two regulation wins in 17 games. That team recently signed ex-NHLer Turner Elson. Šustr, who is now 33, has not played for Plzeň since he was 18.
Another possibility might be German club Kölner Haie, where he played last season. Switzerland is also always a popular destination for high-profile European players.
