Canadian left winger Turner Elson, 32, has signed to play the rest of the current season with HC Plzeň, the Czech Extraliga team announced on Saturday.
“In the current situation, we’re trying to be active in the market, even if it’s not easy,” said Plzeň coach Josef Jandač. “With the departure of Olivier Archambault, there was a vacancy for an import player, and when the opportunity arose to sign Turner, we carefully vetted him and approached him based on several factors. I believe that Turner will bring a lot of hard work to the team.”
Since the aforementioned departure of Archambault, a Montreal Canadiens draft pick and a prospect in several organizations, Plzeň has signed 21-year-old Boston Bruins prospect Adam Měchura and now Elson.
Born in Greater Vancouver and raised in Greater Edmonton, Elson played junior hockey for the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels. Undrafted, he signed with the Calgary Flames in 2011 and stayed in the organization for five years before moving on to the Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild. He played one game with the Flames, recording an assist, and two games with the Red Wings.
This is Elson’s first contract to play in Europe.
Plzeň currently sits last in the 14-team Extraliga with just four wins – two in regulation – in its first 14 games.
