Andres Ambühl, the all-time regular-season leader in games played in the Swiss top division, has been suspended two games and fined 4,000 Swiss francs (approximately $4,715 US) for a check to the head of Oskars Lapinskis of the SCL Tigers in a National League game on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at the 27:31 mark of the game between the Tigers and HC Davos, with the Tigers leading 4-0 at the time. Ambühl was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct, and the Tigers went on to win 7-0.
Last Thursday, September 19, Ambühl played his 1,043rd career regular-season National League game, which eclipsed the record held by Beat Gerber. Ambühl still trails Gerber in terms of total games (regular season and playoffs together), and had he not been suspended, he could have broken that record on October 6. Now that he is forced to miss two games, he is on pace to play his record-tying 1,270th game on October 10 at home to SC Bern and his record-breaking 1,271st game on October 12 at HC Ajoie.
Ambühl is also the all-time leader in IIHF World Championship top-tier tournaments at 19 and World Championship top-tier games played at 141.
Ambühl, 41, has two assists through his first four games of this, his 25th season as a professional hockey player.
