Hockey Canada announced on Friday its roster for the upcoming Spengler Cup, which will take place Dec. 26 to 31 in Davos, Switzerland. As usual, the team contains a mix of players based in Europe – mostly Switzerland – and the AHL.
This year’s roster includes two players who aren’t currently under contract with any team – defenseman Matt Irwin and forward Sam Gagner, both veteran former NHLers. However, Gagner has been practising with Swedish club Djurgarden and it’s rumored that he will join the team – possibly in January after the Spengler Cup is finished.
As for the other 24 players, 13 play in the AHL, nine in Switzerland’s National League, one in the ECHL and one in Finland’s Liiga.
The team is coached by Gerard Gallant, who is assisted by Dave Hasktol and Johan Lundskog. The GMs are Brad Pascall and Joe Thornton and the assistant GM is Hnat Domenichelli, who is the GM of HC Lugano in Switzerland.
“All of the players named today are extremely excited to represent their country and wear the maple leaf as they compete at the Spengler Cup,” said Pascall. “Our management group feels we have a good mix of experienced players with a wealth of skill and leadership. This is a unique and exciting tournament, and we know these players will embrace the challenge in front of them.”
Other teams in this year’s Spengler Cup include Dynamo Pardubice from Czechia, Kärpät Oulu from Finland, the Straubing Tigers from Germany, and Fribourg-Gottéron and host HC Davos from Switzerland.
