Montreal bolsters its blue line with a physical German defender as Joshua Roy seeks a fresh start in Utah following a stagnant stint in the Canadiens’ system.

The Montreal Canadiens made a prospect swap with the Utah Mammoth on Monday, acquiring defenseman Maksymilian Szuber in exchange for forward Joshua Roy.

Szuber was born in Poland but represents Germany internationally. Is coming off a good year in the AHL with the Tucson Roadrunners. He put up 11 goals and 27 points in 65 games, leading all Tucson defensemen in goals.

At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, he brings a good amount of size to Montreal’s system, and he’s already spent three seasons developing in North America, including a brief NHL appearance with Arizona back in 2024.

Heading the other way is Joshua Roy, who gets a change of scenery after struggling to lock down a consistent NHL role in Montreal. The 22-year-old spent most of last season with Laval, putting up 23 goals and 45 points in 57 AHL games. But only managed to appear in three NHL games and didn’t register a point.

This is one of those trades that wash each other out. Meaning, both teams swap prospects, and maybe one of them will flourish. Maybe both will be good depth players. Only time will tell, but don't expect them to be anything spectacular.
