Russian winger Evgeny Svechnikov, 28, has signed a one-year contract with Amur Khabarovsk, the KHL club announced on Wednesday.
After playing in North America from 2014 to 2023, this will be Svechnikov’s third KHL team in three seasons. A native of Sakhalin Island, north of Japan off of Russia’s east coast, Khabarovsk is the closest KHL team to Svechnikov’s hometown, some 600 km away.
After playing three KHL games with Ak Bars Kazan in 2013-14 at age 17, Svechnikov played two seasons with the QMJHL’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. After being named to the league’s all-rookie team in 2014-15, he was drafted in the first round, 19th overall, by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
From 2016 to 2023, Svechnikov played 172 NHL games with the Wings, Winnipeg Jets and San Jose Sharks, recording 45 points and 84 penalty minutes. His best NHL season came in 2021-22 with Winnipeg, when he tallied 19 points in 72 games.
Internationally, Svechnikov played for Russia at two IIHF U-18 World Championships and two World Junior Championships, earning a silver at the 2016 World Juniors.
