After seven seasons in North America, the veteran defenseman returns home on a two-year deal with Växjö Lakers HC, seeking a fresh start and an SHL championship.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defensemen Sebastian Aho has signed in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
Aho, 30, has had a tough journey in the NHL, and spent most of his professional career in the AHL playing with numerous teams. However, now he is heading home to Sweden to play for Växjö Lakers HC.
The deal is expected to be a two-year contract, given his age and how his North American hockey career has gone. He likely will remain back home until he decides to call it a career.
Over his five-year NHL career, he has played in 190 games, scoring 11 goals and 39 assists for 50 points. All of his 190 NHL games came as a member of the New York Islanders from 2017-2024. Which was the team he was drafted by in the 5th round of the 2017 NHL Draft.
Since his last game in the NHL, he played the last two seasons with the Penguins in the AHL. Where he had 14 points in back-to-back seasons.
He will now return home to Sweden and play for a new team than he did before his NHL career. He suited up for Skelleftea AIK for five years, including their Jr. team. He will look to help the Lakers win their first SHL Championship since 2022-23.
