Fresh off a historic playoff run, the Stanley Cup champion arrives in Edmonton on a high-value deal to anchor a revamped crease and solve the Oilers' goaltending woes.
The Edmonton Oilers have finally landed themselves a starting goalie, and it just happens to be Stanley Cup winner Frederik Andersen.
Andersen signed late into the evening and now will be tasked with being the number one goalie with the Oilers. However, the deal is short, just one year long, and carries a very low cap hit of $1 million. The deal does come with $1.8 million in potential bonuses.
This is a signing that was all made possible by the Darnell Nurse trade. If he wasn't moved, the Oilers were cap-strapped. But after the deal, it allowed them to make a few moves and address a major need between the pipes.
The Herning, Denmark native is coming off one of the best playoff runs we've seen in the last 30 years. In 16 games, he went 13-2 with a 1.89 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.
In the regular season, he went 16-14-5 with a 3.05 GAA and .874 SV% in 35 games. Which isn't the best season that he has had, but when he became fully healthy in the playoffs, he showed what he can do at 36 years old.
He will be joined by Tristan Jarry and newly acquired Devon Levi as the goalie trio in Edmonton, moving forward.
