Frederik Andersen and Nikolaj Ehlers made history for Denmark, overcoming injuries and personal loss to secure Carolina’s championship with a dominant shutout victory over the Golden Knights.
The 2026 Stanley Cup Final ended up being a pretty special moment for hockey fans in Denmark. With Frederik Andersen and Nikolaj Ehlers both finally getting their turn to hoist the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes.
It’s the first time two Danish players have ever won the Cup in the same season, which is a nice little milestone for a country that’s been producing more and more NHL talent over the years.
For Ehlers, it kind of felt like everything coming together at once. He spent the first decade of his career with the Winnipeg Jets, then made the jump last summer by signing a six-year deal with Carolina. He finished the playoffs with 18 points in 18 games. He also had the empty-net goal in Game 6 to seal the 3-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights.
Andersen’s path was a bit harder. The 36-year-old goalie carried Carolina through most of the first three rounds, finishing with a 13-2 record while dealing with the emotional weight of losing his longtime agent Claude Lemieux. Eventually a knee injury would force him out of the series, but he still had a huge impact on what could be the best playoff run by a team in over a decade.
Denmark has to be proud. Two of the best to ever suit up for their country just won a Stanley Cup together. A feat that hadn't been accomplished until last night.
The only question left is, will they bring the Cup back home together and celebrate with their fellow countrymen?
