Canada’s World Championship roster is now up to 24 as Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has been added, according to Darren Dreger of TSN. It will be the second World Championship for Tavares, who also played for Canada in 2010 in Germany.

Tavares, 33, became available after Toronto was eliminated on Saturday by the Boston Bruins in overtime of game seven of their first-round playoff series. He is the only Leafs player on the Canadian team, but teammates David Kämpf has joined host Czechia and Pontus Holmberg has joined Sweden

The roster update comes three days after Canada added veteran forwards Pierre-Luc Dubois, Nick Paul and Brandon Hagel to its roster at the expense of youngsters Macklin Celebrini and Adam Fantilli.

The 2024 IIHF World Championship begins on Friday but Canada's first game is on Saturday against Great Britain at 12:15 pm (6:15 am ET, 3:15 am PT).
