© James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports - Martin Nečas to join Czechia at World Championship

Martin Nečas will join the Czech national team at the IIHF World Championship in Prague, the Czech Ice Hockey Association has announced. Nečas previously played in the 2018 Worlds, where he recorded five points in seven games.

Nečas, whose name means “inclement weather” in Czech, became available when his Carolina Hurricanes were eliminated in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the New York Rangers on Thursday.

“Martin Nečas went through a medical and exit examination by the club today and boarded a plane to Prague as soon as possible. He should join the team on Saturday, and his inclusion in the lineup will then depend on an agreement with the coaches,” said national team GM Petr Nedvěd.

The flight Nečas is on is due to arrive at Prague’s Václav Havel International Airport on Saturday morning. Nedvěd added that Nečas probably won’t practise that day, but when he finally joins the team, one non-roster player will be dropped from the team’s practise squad.
