© Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports - Mikko Koskinen officially retires, begins new career

Finnish goaltender Mikko Koskinen, 36, has officially retired as a hockey player and is now beginning a new career as a player agent, Finnish media outlet Ilta-Sanomat has reported.

A product of the Espoo Blues in suburban Helsinki, Koskinen played professionally in Finland, the United States, Russia, Canada and Switzerland from 2008 to 2024.

He had two separate stints in North America. In the first, Koskinen played mostly in the AHL but played four games for the New York Islanders in 2010-11. After seven seasons back in Europe, he had a more successful stretch between 2018 and 2022, playing 168 NHL regular-season games and seven more in the playoffs for the Edmonton Oilers. Koskinen spent the past two seasons playing for HC Lugano in Switzerland’s National League.

Internationally, Koskinen represented Finland at two IIHF World Championships, taking home a silver medal from each, and was the team’s starting goaltender at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

At the end of July, Koskinen officially registered as an agent in the Finnish Ice Hockey Players’ Association and will be based in Helsinki. As part of his new job, he has had to give up his ownership stake in Liiga club Kiekko-Espoo to avoid any conflict of interests.
