Russian winger Nikolai Kulyomin has signed a professional try-out (PTO) contract with the Ottawa Senators, the NHL club announced on Thursday.
At 38 years years of age, this is an interesting move for both parties. Last season, Kulyomin had 25 points in 46 KHL regular-season games with Salavat Yulayev Ufa. He was then pointless in two playoff games.
Kulyomin (whose name was usually transliterated as Kulemin by North American media) was chosen in the second round, 44th overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2006. Between 2008 and 2018, he played 669 NHL regular-season games with the Leafs and New York Islanders, scoring 121 goals and adding 153 assists for 274 points, with 173 penalty minutes. He also had seven points in 25 playoff games.
Kulyomin has spent the last six seasons in the KHL, first with his hometown club Metallurg Magnitogorsk and then the last three with Ufa. Between the KHL and its predecessor, the Russian Superleague, he has 291 points in 546 total regular-season and playoff games dating back to 2005.
Internationally, Kulyomin has represented Russia at seven IIHF World Championships and at the 2014 Winter Olympics on home ice in Sochi. He won World Championship gold medals in 2012 and 2014.
