Canadian center Rourke Chartier, 28, has signed a one-year contract with Kunlun Red Star, the KHL club announced on Thursday.

Originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 2014, he has played 56 NHL games, most of those this past season with the Ottawa Senators, where he played 37. Overall, he has three NHL goals and one assist.

Internationally, Chartier represented Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, recording two assists in five games.

Chartier is the fourth North American player to sign with Kunlun in the past week, following goaltender Kyle Keyser, Chris Wilkie and an extension for Tyler Graovac. Once the basis of the Chinese national team, Kunlun’s roster still has eight players from the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Although ostensibly still a Chinese-based club, Kunlun has not played a game in China in more than four years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The team currently plays its home games in suburban Moscow, ostensibly for reasons still related to pandemic-related travel restrictions.
