© Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports - Swedes sending strong lineup to World Junior Summer Showcase

Sweden will bring a strong lineup to the World Junior Summer Showcase in Plymouth, Michigan, July 26-August 3. The 25 players on the roster were all born in 2005 or 2006 and 19 of them have already been drafted by NHL teams.

Among the most prominent names are 2005 first-rounders Tom Willander (Vancouver Canucks), Theo Lindstein and Otto Stenberg (both St. Louis Blues), and second-rounder Felix Unger Sörum (Carolina Hurricanes), who played for Sweden during the senior men’s IIHF World Championship. All played prominent roles on last year’s IIHF World Junior Championship silver-medal team on home ice.

Not included is defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellika, who has signed an entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings but is expected to play this upcoming season for Skellefteå AIK in the SHL. He is a lock to make the World Junior team if he’s not in the NHL.

“It feels very exciting to go away with this group to the USA and start the season in Plymouth,” said coach Magnus Hävelid. “We have with us a bunch of players who played in the World Juniors last year, a lot of faces we got to know during the U19 gatherings last spring and a bunch who played in the U18 World Championship last spring. It will also be the first tournament with the new management staff and an important opportunity for us to start finding our chemistry in a real game environment.”

Because the Swedish U18 team is preparing for the upcoming Hlinka Gretzky Cup, 2007-born players such as Anton Frondell, Sascha Boumedienne, Jakob Ihs-Wozniak or Viktor Eklund won’t be on this team but should get a chance to try out for the U20 team at some point before the 2025 World Juniors.

The Swedes are scheduled to arrive in the Detroit area on July 23, five days ahead of their first game against USA Blue.
