Bill Zito aggressivey reshaped Florida’s crease by bringing Jacob Markstrom back to South Florida. This blockbuster trade secures a veteran starter before Sergei Bobrovsky hits the open market.
The Florida Panthers made one of the biggest moves of the day, acquiring goaltender Jacob Markstrom from the New Jersey Devils. Florida also picked up forward Angus Crookshank in the deal, while New Jersey receives Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist, and prospect Ben Steeves.
The trade answers one of Florida's biggest questions heading into free agency.
With Sergei Bobrovsky expected to hit the open market on Tuesday, Bill Zito wasn't about to wait around. Instead, he went out and landed the goalie who now takes over as Florida's projected starter.
It's also a bit of a homecoming for Markstrom. The Panthers originally drafted him back in 2008, and he spent the early part of his career with the organization before moving on.
Last season with the Devils wasn't his best. Markstrom finished with a 3.07 goals-against average and an .883 save percentage in 44 games, but Florida is betting there's still more there. The Panthers have built one of the better defensive teams in the league over the last few years, and they'll hope that helps Markstrom settle into his game.
He's entering the first season of a two-year contract carrying a $6 million cap hit, with the Devils retaining none of the salary. Add in yesterday's trade for Akira Schmid, and Florida has completely changed its goaltending picture in less than two days.
Giving up Rodrigues and Boqvist isn't nothing. Both played important depth roles during their time with the Panthers. Still, Zito clearly felt getting the crease sorted out was the bigger priority, and this move shows just how quickly he was willing to address it.
