Martin Rulsch - Swiss summer U20 squad close to potential World Junior roster

A group of 37 players are attending Switzerland’s U20 summer camp in Vierumäki, Finland. It will include four games between Wednesday and Monday – two against the Czech U20 team that is also training in Vierumäki and one each against a pair of Finnish teams, from which Finland’s World Junior Summer Showcase will be named after the mini-tournament.

Three players on the Swiss squad have been drafted by NHL teams: goaltender Christian Kirsch by the San Jose Sharks, defenseman Basile Sansonnens by the Vancouver Canucks and forward Rico Gredig by the New York Rangers.

Between the 26 roster players and the 11 named to the reserve squad, pretty well all players who might be considered for this year’s World Junior Championship squad are accounted for except for two, possibly three exceptions.

There are two 2006-born omissions on defense who are locks to be on the World Junior squad: Leon Muggli, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals and will likely play back in Zug next season, and Daniil Ustinkov, who was somewhat surprisingly not drafted and will head back to the Zurich Lions.

Forward Guillaume Kaser of EHC Biel-Bienne, who had two points in three games with the Swiss junior national team last season, does not appear on either the roster or the reserve squad.

Switzerland will host a five-team U20 tournament in Zug in late August that also includes Sweden, Finland, Czechia and Slovakia.
