    Canadian center Josh Currie, 31, has signed a one-year contract to play for Kölner Haie, the DEL club based in Cologne, Germany announced on Thursday.

    “After very good discussions with those in charge, I have consciously decided to move to Cologne,” said Currie. “I’m looking forward to the coming season and want to help the team and the club achieve their goals. For me, it’s now about getting to know my teammates as quickly as possible and getting into the swing of things.”

    The Charlottetown, PEI native played junior for the hometown Islanders in the QMJHL, captaining the team for two years and putting up 104 points in 68 games in his final season. After five full seasons in the minors, he broke into the NHL in 2018-19, when he recorded five points in 21 games with the Edmonton Oilers. After that season he played one more NHL game in 2021 with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

    After two seasons in the KHL, Currie spent last season with the AHL’s Belleville Senators, where he recorded 29 points in 62 regular-season games and then had six points in seven playoff games.

    “We are delighted that Josh Currie is now part of our team,” said club sports director Matthias Baldys. “Josh already has European experience and his style of play fits in very well with our concept. He plays with a lot of heart and passion and will definitely help us with his skills in many different situations in the game.”

    Internationally notable players on Die Haie’s roster include German defenseman Moritz Müller, German winger Justin Schütz, Swedish winger Andreas Thuresson and Danish winger Frederik Storm. The team is coached by former NHLer and Finnish national team bench boss Kari Jalonen
