Veteran Russian defenseman Nikita Zaitsev has signed a four-year contract with SKA St. Petersburg, the KHL club announced on Thursday.

Zaitsev, 32, is a Moscow native and spent his last three seasons before going to the NHL with CSKA Moscow, so it’s an interesting move heading to an intense rival.

Zaitsev was never drafted by an NHL club and went overseas at age 24. In eight NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks, he recorded 118 points and 197 penalty minutes in 482 games. He also had two assists in 18 playoff games, all with Toronto.

In 2016-17, his first NHL season, Zaitsev tallied 36 points in 82 games, but he never got more than 17 in any of the seven seasons since. However, only once in those seasons did he play more than 62 games.

Internationally, Zaitsev won an IIHF World Junior Championship with Russia in 2011 and has played in four World Championships, receiving two bronze medals.
