Swedish winger Daniel Torgersson, 22, has signed a contract to play through the end of the 2025-26 season with JYP Jyväskylä, the Finnish Liiga club announced on Monday.

The announcement was made the day after after Torgersson had cleared waivers. The Winnipeg Jets had waived him on Saturday for the purpose of terminating his contract. Torgersson had no points in 12 games with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose this season.

“I’m looking forward to playing,” said Torgersson. “The Liiga is a good place for me to take the next step in my career and develop as a player.”

“Daniel is a good-sized forward who knows how to use his size to his advantage on the ice,” said JYP sports director Simo Mälkiä. “He works hard and puts his body on the line for his team.”

“I like to play at a high pace and use my size to my advantage in the attacking zone,” said the 6-foot-3, 220-pound winger. “I’m good at protecting the puck and taking it to the net.”

Originally from Hönö, a town on a small island off of Sweden’s west coast near Gothenburg, Torgersson played for Frölunda HC from age 15 to 19, playing nine SHL games and one Champions Hockey League game with the club.

Torgersson was chosen in the second round, 40th overall, by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Since 2022, he had recorded 34 points and 34 penalty minutes in 144 AHL regular-season and playoff games.

Internationally, Torgersson won a bronze medal with Sweden at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton.

Torgersson joins a JYP team that sits 15th out of 16 teams in the Liiga standings with 40 points in 34 games. The team’s roster includes 20-year-old New York Islanders prospect Jesse Pulkkinen and 21-year-old Chicago Blackhawks prospect Riku Tohila.

Torgersson could make his debut for JYP on Jan. 3 against TPS Turku.
