In the team's only game together before the 2024 IIHF World Championship, the USA defeated Slovakia 6-2 in Bratislava. In goal, Alex Lyon of the Detroit Red Wings played the first two periods and Red Wings' goalie prospect Trey Augustine played the third.
In his 40 minutes of work, Lyon stopped 21 of 23 Slovak shots. With his team ahead 2-0, he allowed a goal by Juraj Slafkovský late in the first period and another by Peter Cehlarík early in the second to tie the score, but his team was up 3-2 by the time he exited the game.
For Lyon, 31, this is the second time he's been selected to a World Championship squad but he's yet to play a game. In 2015, while he still played for Yale University, Lyon was the third goalie on the US squad that won the bronze medal in Prague and Ostrava. Lyon played behind Connor Hellebuyck and Jack Campbell in 2015. Now Lyon is the veteran and Augustine - possibly his future teammate - is his understudy.
"Obviously very talented, he could be an extremely good goalie," Lyon said of Augustine. "He's got a good mindset so it's a pleasure."
Augustine didn't have a busy third period but stopped all four Slovak shots directed his way, and faced some early pressure and stopped Marko Daňo on a breakaway.
