However, following immense backlash from the Finnish media and public concerning Rönni’s 2024 conviction for sexual assault, the two sides mutually agreed to terminate the contract three weeks later [https://thehockeynews.com/international/latest-news/topi-rnnis-contract-with-finnish-club-terminated-due-to-public-uproar]. Therefore, instead of playing in Finland’s top league, Rönni will play on one of two Hungarian-based clubs in the 13-team International Central European (ICE) Hockey League, which also has teams in Austria, Italy and Slovenia. Rönni, who starred for Finnish club Tappara as a teenager, was chosen in the second round, 59th overall, by the Calgary Flames [http://thn.com/calgary] in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. However, both Tappara and Calgary severed ties with him in March 2024 after he was convicted of sexual assault in a Finnish court for an incident that occurred in 2021, when Rönni was a minor.
