Finnish center Topi Rönni, 21, has signed a one-year contract with Ferencvárosi TC, the Hungarian-based ICEHL club announced on Tuesday.

It’s been an eventful off-season for Rönni who, back in April, signed with Finnish Liiga club Vaasan Sport. However, following immense backlash from the Finnish media and public concerning Rönni’s 2024 conviction for sexual assault, the two sides mutually agreed to terminate the contract three weeks later.

Therefore, instead of playing in Finland’s top league, Rönni will play on one of two Hungarian-based clubs in the 13-team International Central European (ICE) Hockey League, which also has teams in Austria, Italy and Slovenia.

Rönni, who starred for Finnish club Tappara as a teenager, was chosen in the second round, 59th overall, by the Calgary Flames in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. However, both Tappara and Calgary severed ties with him in March 2024 after he was convicted of sexual assault in a Finnish court for an incident that occurred in 2021, when Rönni was a minor.

Last season, Rönni recorded 29 points in 48 regular-season and playoff games for Dukla Michalovce in the Slovak Extraliga.

Ferencvárosi, a club based in Budapest, will play in the league for the first time in 2025-26 after previously playing in the Hungarian-Romanian Erste Liga.
