Welcome to The Hockey News Lineups

It's always been a passion of mine to see how a team "looks on paper", especially after a big trade or free agent signing.

About 10 years ago I started publishing my NHL projections online and joined CapFriendly about six years ago. It was a tremendous thrill to work on the site, but also a major disappointment when I found out the site was being sold to the Washington Capitals and my services were no longer required.

As luck would have it, I discovered that The Hockey News was looking to add more roster and lineup content to their site. So here we are. We wanted to get the data online as soon as possible, so the content will temporarily be published using Google Sheets. The long-term goal is to build something more user-friendly, so stay tuned for a more robust feature down the road. The data can be a little slow to load sometimes, but I think they actually look pretty good in this format. I tried to mimic the CapFriendly layout with a few tweaks, so it should look familiar to those who visited the old pages.

I've teamed up with the guys at evolving-hockey.com to bring some advanced hockey stats to the depth charts. You'll now find CF% (Corsi For), iGx (individual expected goals) and GSAx (goals saved above expected). For an explanation of these stats and all advanced stats in general, I recommend reading the Evolving-Hockey Glossary.

The projected lineups/depth chart pages will be updated in as close to real-time as possible. The goal is to always display what the team's next game will look like with updated forward lines, defensive pairings and starting goalie. I also keep a close eye on player jersey numbers and positions.

Expect to see additions and tweaks made to the team pages as we go along. Injury and other status icons will likely be added at some point, as well as pages dedicated to injury updates and transactions. I also hope to include some roster analysis in article form if I can find the time.

There is a lot of data to track and errors are likely to occur at some point. Feel free to reach out to me (@NHL_Rosters) if you see something out of place or you think my projections need a tweak. Tracking 32 teams isn't always easy, so help is always appreciated.
