The Michigan Tech Huskies won their first-ever CCHA Mason Cup last night with their 2-1 win over Bemidji State. The Huskies' win sends them back to the NCAA Tournament.
Coming into last night's game between Michigan Tech and Bemidji State, the Huskies hadn't beaten the Beavers in over 11 games. But they snapped that streak with a 2-1 win in the CCHA Championship.
"I just have a lot of love for our team," Huskies coach Joe Shawhan told reporters after the game. "It's a great group of guys win or lose. The leadership of this group with the desire to keep playing and to share more experiences is tremendous. I couldn't have asked for a better group to be around. Not many teams can say they went three years in a row to the national tournament. These guys have earned that."
The win over the Beavers marked the Huskies' first-ever CCHA Title but their 12th title in program history. 11 of their 12 came in the WCHA.
Michigan Tech will now go back to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and fourth under coach Shawhan in his seven seasons.
