    2024-25 Review:

After a 24-14-2 Regular season, the Boston University Terriers finished just short of a national championship, falling 6-2 against the Western Michigan University Broncos. The powerhouse program had its own Cinderella story, with the midseason transfer of goaltender Mikhail Yegorov from the United States Hockey League’s Omaha Lancers. The New Jersey Devils prospect captivated the world of college hockey as a true freshman, boasting an incredible 11-6-1 record through 18 games, highlighted by a 0.927 save percentage and a 2.15 goals allowed average.

    Key Departures:

After leading the Terriers with 23 goals and 50 points through 38 games, Quinn Hutson signed an entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers. This season, Hutson will play in the American Hockey League for the Bakersfield Condors. Matt Copponi joins his collegiate teammate, Hutson, in the Oilers organization, putting pen to paper with the team that drafted him in the seventh round of the 2023 NHL Draft. The transfer from Merrimack College notched 24 points (6 goals + 18 assists) in 40 games. Captain Shane Lachance also signed his own entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils after having his rights sent from Edmonton to New Jersey for facilitating the Trent Frederic trade on March 4.

    Next Men Up:

The Terriers got arguably the biggest name in the transfer portal this summer, landing Chicago Blackhawks prospect Sacha Boisvert from the University of North Dakota. A sophomore this season, Boisvert led the Fighting Hawks with 18 goals and 32 points through 37 games last year. Freshman Charlie Trethewey looks to add his dynamic presence to Boston University. At 6’2” and 194 pounds, the Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick has the best of skill and physicality. Last season with the US National Team Development Program, the defenseman earned 20 points (6 goals + 14 assists) in 63 games, while finishing third on his team with 35 penalty minutes. Look for him to potentially be paired with Sophomore and Winnipeg Jets prospect Sascha Boumedienne due to their similar styles of play.

    The Road Ahead:

Gavin McCarthy was named captain for the upcoming season on Sept. 8, with Jack Harvey, Cole Hutson, and Cole Eiserman tapped as alternates. McCarthy is the perfect choice to lead this team, especially having watched him grow since his days in Muskegon into a steadfast presence.

After losing three of their top scorers to the professional ranks ,some may have been initially concerned about offensive production. The Terriers quickly filled the gaps with freshmen and transfers, led by Boisvert and Trethewey. With one of the best goaltenders in college hockey and a reloaded forward group, Boston University is a frontrunner for another national championship.
