O'Connell spent the 2023-24 season as associate coach and recruiting coordinator for the Sun Devils

Arizona State associate coach and recruiting coordinator Albie O'Connell is leaving the program, Craig Morgan reported Wednesday.

O'Connell, who joined the Sun Devils before the 2023-24 season, is departing 'for an opportunity with an NHL team.'

A product of Watertown, MA., O'Connell has quite an extensive coaching resume. O'Connell started out as assistant coach at Berkshire School (USHS) in 2002-03 and has gone on to work for numerous NCAA teams across his long coaching career.

After one season at Berkshire, O'Connell got his first NCAA coaching job as an assistant coach at Colby College (NCAA-III).

Spending one season with the Mules, O'Connell would make the jump to the Division I level as an assistant coach at Niagara University and never looked back.

Along with the Purple Eagles, O'Connell worked as an assistant coach for Holy Cross (2006-07), Merrimack College (2007-08), Northeastern (2008-11), Harvard (2011-14) and Boston University (2014-15).

After over ten years working as an assistant coach, O'Connell made the jump to associate head coach with the Terriers (held the role from 2015-18) before eventually taking the reins himself.

O'Connell worked as the head coach of the Terriers for four seasons before joining the Montreal Canadiens in 2022 as a college scout. After spending one season with the Canadiens, he joined the Sun Devils.

As O'Connell departs for the NHL once again, Morgan reported that there is numerous people from across the hockey world that are interested in O'Connell's position. With that, the role shouldn't take long to fill.
