Northern Manitoba Blizzard defenseman Benson Hirst has committed to Northern Michigan, it was announced earlier this week.

Hirst, who hails from Lac du Bonnet, Man., split this season between the Blizzard and Prairie Hockey Academy U18 Prep. In 24 prep games, Hirst scored 12 goals and added 13 assists for 25 points while putting up five goals and 10 points in 21 regular season games with Northern Manitoba.

With the Blizzard having made the MJHL playoffs, Hirst did not look out of place either, putting up two goals in 12 games while being solid at both ends of the ice.

Prior to this season, Hirst grew up playing his minor hockey with Eastman Selects as well as Pilot Mound Academy.

With Hirst not scheduled to join the Wildcats until 2026, he will have the ability to get a full season of junior hockey with the Blizzard in his portfolio before heading off to the NCAA. Already a strong, physical defender, Hirst has the makings of a difference maker in the future.
