Boston College landed two massive commitments this past week, and they did so by stepping on the toes of a rival. Who are these players, and what kind of impact can they make once they step on campus?
The last few days have been eventful for the Boston College Eagles as they continue adding talent to their 2028 recruiting class, including a commitment flip from the Boston University Terriers.
The first news was the commitment of 2028 NHL draft-eligible Benjamin Veitch. He will be playing next season in the QMJHL, as he’s set to play his second season for the Newfoundland Regiment. He’s a late-2009 birthdate, which is why he’s pushed back to the 2028 draft, but he already shows qualities of a high-end prospect.
Veitch has a non-stop motor, and when you combine his speed with his bursts of physicality, he can be a great forechecker in a puck-retrieval type of system. He has very smooth hands and a pretty good shot to go along with that; he finds the soft spots on the ice and can become a very good option for his teammates constantly.
He lit up the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup this past August with five goals and seven points in five games.
The second half of this news was due to Boston University commit Luke Schairer flipping his commitment from the Terriers to the Eagles. Another 2027 recruit, but he’s already been drafted. He was selected in the third round this past June by the St.Louis Blues, where he was a pretty prominent player on the U.S. NTDP. Next season he’ll be with the Peterborough Petes in the OHL, adding to a long list of NTDP players to request a release.
Both of these moves aren’t going to change anything for next season, but what it shows is that the program is committed to adding talent as fast as they can so they can start to work on future recruiting classes. Both of these players are going to make a huge impact once they step on campus, and if BC is able to continue this recruiting run, they’ll be back in national title conversations in no time.
