The Washington Capitals prospect finished off a dominant freshman season with a heartbreaking loss in the national championship game

Boston College forward Ryan Leonard will be returning to the Eagles for his sophomore season, the Capitals announced Wednesday.

Drafted in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Capitals, Leonard was a part of a dominant line this past season alongside fellow freshman players Will Smith and Gabe Perreault.

Over 41 games played, Leonard put up an impressive 31 goals and 29 assists for 60 points, good for third on the Eagles in points behind Smith and Cutter Gauthier.

While it is still unclear if Perreault and Smith will return next season, the Eagles have to be happy to have one of their best players returning. Some think Smith will sign and turn pro next year, but Perreault may be more likely to return for his sophomore season.

While Caps fans will have to wait another year before seeing their top prospect turn pro, the wait will be worth it.
