Former Bowling Green forward Matvei Kabanov has signed a try-out in the KHL with Lada Togliatti, it was announced earlier this week.
Hailing from Togliatti, Russia, Kabanov just finished his first season with the Falcons and second in the NCAA, scoring two goals and adding four assists for six points in 13 games. Across a total of 39 career NCAA games with Bowling Green and Northern Michigan, Kabanov collected six goals and nine assists for 15 points.
Before heading to North America, Kabanov played his minor and junior hockey in his home country. Having grown up playing in Lada Togliatti's system, Kabanov played U16 and U18 before making the jump to the MHL (Russia's top junior circuit). After only three games with Togliatti at the MHL level, Kabanov made the move to Amurskie Tigry Khabarovsk, where he would play the rest of his junior hockey.
With Kabanov getting the opportunity to earn a KHL contract, his professional career is clearly nearing its start. A talented player with the puck, Kabanov flashed his skills throughout his time in the NCAA and should be able to earn himself a deal with Lada Togliatti.
