The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed former North Dakota defenseman Caleb MacDonald to a two-year, entry-level deal, it was announced Wednesday.
MacDonald, a native of Cambridge, Ont., joins the Blue Jackets after spending two seasons in the NCAA. In his first season with the Fighting Hawks this year, he scored three goals and added seven assists for 10 points in 35 games.
Across a total of 66 career games with North Dakota and Alaska Fairbanks, McDonald accumulated seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points. Prior to that, he spent time playing junior hockey in the GOJHL with the St. Mary's Lincolns and the AJHL with the Whitecourt Wolverines.
“Caleb MacDonald is a big, strong defenseman who excels at blocking shots and being sound and sturdy in the defensive zone," said Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell.
As MacDonald now turns pro, he will get the opportunity to develop his game and have a little bit of runway with two years on the deal. As someone who has a lot of pro habits built into his game already, MacDonald will be worth keeping an eye on.
