Arizona State hockey turns to experienced coach Dave Hakstol to lead the Sun Devils through a challenging transition and build a stronger future.
Arizona State University is entering a new chapter in its men’s hockey program after announcing Dave Hakstol as its next head coach on October 15, 2026. With years of experience at both the college and professional levels, Hakstol arrives with the goal of moving the Sun Devils forward during a difficult period for the team.
Hakstol has built an impressive coaching résumé throughout his career. He spent 11 seasons leading the University of North Dakota, earning 289 wins and taking his teams to seven Frozen Four appearances. His success at the college level eventually opened the door to the NHL, where he coached the Philadelphia Flyers and Seattle Kraken. In 2025, he joined the Colorado Avalanche as an assistant coach, where he left when offered this role.
His arrival comes at a challenging time for the Sun Devils. Defenseman Matthew Mayich experienced a medical emergency during an outdoor workout in August and remains in critical condition. The incident has had a major impact on the program, creating uncertainty as the team starts off their season.
Former head coach Greg Powers was placed on leave in September after players raised concerns about how the situation involving Mayich was handled. These developments have created additional challenges for Arizona State, making leadership and stability important priorities moving forward.
Hakstol will now be responsible for guiding the team through this difficult period while continuing to develop its players and maintain the program’s competitiveness. His background in college hockey could be especially valuable as he understands college athletes, and has proven success in the sport.
Although the circumstances surrounding his appointment are complicated, Hakstol brings experience and a record of success that could help Arizona State establish a new direction. Rebuilding confidence, supporting the players and creating a positive team environment will be important parts of his role.
As the Sun Devils begin this transition, attention will turn toward how Hakstol shapes the program in the coming months.
For Hakstol, the challenge is clear: turn a chaotic moment for Arizona State hockey into the beginning of a new era.
