Fresh off their second title in three years, the Greyhounds look to extend their NE10 dominance behind offensive powerhouse Jonathan Surrette while their burgeoning women’s program expands.
Assumption University is a founding member of the Northeast 10 (NE10) in 1979, but the institution's hockey team goes further back. Greyhound hockey predates the conference by a decade and half, starting in 1964. They competed in the hockey only ECAC Northeast (Division II) before switching their hockey team over to the NE10 in 2009.
The Greyhounds are the reigning NE10 Conference Champions, beating Saint Anselm 5-4 on March 7. 2026 marked Assumption's second title in three years and fourth all time. Prior to this recent stretch, the Greyhounds' other summits occurred in 2017 over Saint Michael's and 2022 against Post.
As they defend their title, I am most intrigued to see how rising senior Jonathan Surrette follows up a ridiculous 2025-26 campaign. He racked up 65 points (34 goals + 31 assists) and 51 penalty minutes across 33 games, leading the Greyhounds in all three offensive categories. Surrette was also a freshman on the 2024 championship roster.
However, it's not just Assumption's men doing well on ice. The university debuted Division I Women's hockey in 2023, joining the New England Women's Hockey Alliance. (NEWHA). The Hockey News' Ian Kennedy spoke with Jack Sweeney the then-Head Coach of the Greyhounds. He referenced the success of the men's team and Assumption as a whole while discussing the new program.
"Assumption has a really rich athletic tradition at the Division II level,” Sweeney said. “Our sports teams have done very well in recent years and the academic piece is a big part, those things made it easy to recruit."

Assumption shares Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center with the ECHL's Worcester Railers and the UPSHL's Boston Junior Rangers. These two teams provide Greyhound coaches a chance to recruit their next generation while showing the professional possibilities for current student athletes.
The effects this of ice cooperation can be can be felt today Current Greyhound sophomore Jake Russell was a two year member of the Boston Junior Rangers and served as the club's captain for the 2024-25 season.
Between both programs, the future for assumption university is very bright. They have cement their a Division II dynasty with would be their third NE10 title in four years this fall.
