Des Moines Buccaneers defenseman Gus Thorp has committed to Minnesota State, it was announced this past week.
Thorp, who hails from Chippewa Falls, Wis., is in his first year of junior hockey after spending the 2023-24 season splitting time between Team Wisconsin 16U and Chippewa Falls High. Over a combined 37 games, he scored 12 goals and added 26 assists for 38 points. Through 12 games with the Buccaneers this season, he has yet to register a point.
Drafted by the Buccaneers in the sixth round of the 2023 USHL Futures Draft, Thorp is a quick thinking, smart defenseman who has the skating skills to create for himself and others.
While he might have gotten off to a slow start when it comes to offense, Thorp has too much talent to be held off the scoresheet much longer. Thorp will be one to watch when he steps into the NCAA in 2026.
