After sweeping their coaching staff, the Bulldogs turn to legendary alumni and championship architects to ignite their new era.
In a move not often seen at the collegiate level, Yale turned over its entire coaching staff in one summer. Interim Head Coach Joe Howe departed to take an assistant job at St. Cloud State. The Bulldogs also did not retain any of Howe's three assistant coaches in Rob O'Gara, Bill Maniscalco and Arlen Marshall.
Still, Yale Administration went right to work filling up the spots behind the bench starting with new Head Coach Jeff Hamilton. As a player from 1996-2001, the former Bulldog Captain racked up a program best 80 goals through 127 games. Hamilton played in nearly 200 NHL games between Carolina, Chicago, the Islanders and Toronto.
In the release announcing his hiring, Hamilton said in part, "My staff and I are committed to elevating the student-athlete experience to the highest standard of recruiting, developing, and championing the very best in college hockey, while providing opportunities that are uniquely Yale."
Supporting Hamilton are assistant coaches Vincent Caligiuri and Anthony Walsh, plus associate coach Kyle Wallack. Caligiuri spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Division III Williams College with previous experience as Princeton's Director of Hockey Operations. Walsh is a 2019 Yale graduate and former captain who was an assistant at Colgate before heading home to New Haven.
Wallack is a massive addition to the Bulldogs' bench. He served as Director of Recruitment at Yale from 2006-11 and was one of the main architects of Yale's 2013 National Championship. The West Hartford, CT, native was Division III Albertus Magnus College's Head Coach since 2019. He won Division III Independent Coach of the Year in 2022-23 and 2023-24 before returning to Yale this fall.
"Having spent six years at Yale where he played an integral role in building our national championship team, we are incredibly fortunate to welcome him back," said Hamilton of Wallack. "His leadership and expertise will be a tremendous asset to our program."
Yale did not experience any impact to their roster from the transfer portal, rather bringing in five freshmen to New Haven. Most notable among them is blueliner Drew Waterfield via the USHL's Waterloo Black Hawks. I have watched Waterfield's progression as a shutdown yet mobile defenseman over his two years of junior hockey, and he will immediately upgrade the Bulldogs' back end.
Their first exhibition game is October 16 against Maryville, while Yale starts the regular season on October 30 hosting Brown.
