Holy Cross have hired Roy Sommer as player development coordinator, the team announced Monday.
Sommer, who has had a coaching career that has spanned almost four decades, served as the head coach of the WHL's Wenatchee Wild in 2023-24.
Drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the sixth round of 1977 NHL Draft, Sommer had a pro career that lasted 10 years from 1977-1987.
After hanging up his skates, Sommer got straight into coaching, joining the Muskegon Lumberjacks (IHL) as an assistant coach.
Following one season in that role, Sommer spent the 1988-89 season with the WHL's Prince Albert Raiders in the same role before getting his first head coaching gig with the Roanoke Valley Rebels (ECHL).
Sommer would spend five seasons in the ECHL as a head coach (four of those being with the Richmond Renegades) before being hired as an assistant coach by the San Jose Sharks in 1996.
Over close to the next three decades, Sommer would work in the NHL (San Jose Sharks), AHL (Kentucky Thoroughblades, Cleveland Barons, Worcester Sharks, San Jose Barracuda & San Diego Gulls) and the WHL (Wenatchee Wild) before joining Holy Cross this past week.
As Sommer gets prepared to work his first non-head coaching gig since 2019-20 and first NCAA gig, he brings with him a wealth of knowledge. Sommer was inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame this year and should be a great resource for the Crusaders.
