Tortorella spent the past six seasons as an assistant coach with Harvard

The University of New Hampshire have hired Jim Tortorella as their new director of hockey operations, the team announced Friday.

Tortorella, a native of Boston, Mass., joins the Wildcats after spending the past six seasons as an assistant coach with Harvard.

The brother of Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella, Jim spent four seasons playing for Maine (1977-1981) before hanging up his pads.

While a decade went by between the end of his playing career and the start of his coaching career, Tortorella's first gig behind a bench came in 1993-94 as an assistant coach with the Wildcats.

After two seasons in that role, Tortorella joined Colby College (NCAA D-III) as their head coach, spending 16 years with the team from 1995-2011.

After leaving the Mules, Tortorella would go on to work for New Hampshire for a second time (2011-2014), Providence College (2016-2017), Saint Anselm College (NCAA D-III, 2017-2018) and Harvard (2018-2024) before accepting his current role.

As Tortorella re-joins the Wildcats for a third time, he will play a large role in the day-to-day operations of the team. While this is the first time in his career he will be in charge of hockey operations, Tortorella's experience in the NCAA should set him up for success in his new role.
