North Dakota is joining the many teams announcing their captains, and for this one, they set a new school record
Cole Reschny has been named the captain of the University of North Dakota hockey team for the 2026-27 season after being voted in by his teammates.
The Macklin, Saskatchewan, native will make program history as the youngest captain in UND hockey history. Reschny also becomes just the third underclassman to wear the “C” for the Fighting Hawks, joining Dave Hakstol, who served as captain in 1990-91, and Bob Murray, who held the role in 1948-49.
Reschny’s leadership experience extends beyond Grand Forks. He served as an assistant captain with the Victoria Royals in 2024-25. UND head coach Dane Jackson pointed to Reschny’s maturity, work ethic and team-first mentality as key reasons for his selection.
“His mature presence, relentless work ethic and team-first approach embodies our North Dakota culture,” Jackson said.
Reschny enters his second season at UND following an impressive freshman campaign. He led all Fighting Hawks freshmen with 35 points and 29 assists, ranking seventh and third nationally among rookies in those categories. He also led NCHC rookies in both overall and conference scoring, earning NCHC Rookie of the Year honors. At the faceoff dot, Reschny recorded 301 wins and a 54.8 winning percentage. The former first-round pick by the Calgary Flames has added more to his game than just his point production.
Joining Reschny in the leadership group will be junior forwards Cody Croal and Mac Swanson, along with senior forward Anthony Menghini. All three will wear a letter for the first time in their collegiate careers.
Croal is coming off a career-best season in which he scored 10 goals and recorded 14 points. Swanson posted 28 points in 40 games, while Menghini recorded 12 points in 35 appearances.
With four forwards bringing a combination of experience, consistency, and leadership, UND will enter the 2026-27 season with a new-look leadership group led by a captain already making history.
