Northern Michigan have hired Phil Fox as an assistant coach, the team announced Friday.
A product of Stillwater, Minn., Fox joins the Wildcats after spending the past five seasons as general manager and head coach of the New Mexico Ice Wolves (NAHL).
Prior to getting into the management/coaching side of hockey, Fox enjoyed a three-year pro career that also saw him suit up for the Wildcats as a player. In 155 career NCAA games, Fox had 65 points and served as Northern Michigan captain in his final season with the team.
After retiring from hockey in 2014, Fox immediately jumped into the management side of the game, joining the Wildcats as director of hockey operations.
After two seasons in that role, Fox spent three seasons coaching - one as an assistant for Stillwater High (USHS) and two as head coach of the New Mexico Ice Wolves 14U A before joining the Ice Wolves in the NAHL.
As Fox makes the jump to coach in the NCAA for the first time, he will be one to watch. Still only 38 years old, Fox had moved up the coaching ranks quickly and could be a prime candidate to lead an NCAA bench in just a few years time.
