Shyiak joins the program from St. Cloud State

Northern Michigan have named Dave Shyiak as their new head coach, the team announced Wednesday.

Shyiak, a product of Brandon, Man., joins the Wildcats after spending the past four seasons as associate head coach at St. Cloud State.

After a brief playing career that saw him suit up for Northern Michigan and one season of professional hockey in Scotland, Shyiak got into coaching in 1992 as a graduate assistant coach with the Wildcats.

Following one season in that role, Shyiak spent two seasons coaching in British Columbia before returning to the Wildcats as an assistant coach.

Shyiak would spend the next 10 years with the Wildcats, serving as an assistant and associate head coach before departing for the University of Alaska-Anchorage in 2005 to be their head coach.

Over the next two decades, Shyiak would work for the Seawolves (2005-2013), Western Michigan (2014-2020) and St. Cloud State (2020-2024) before accepting the job with the Wildcats.

"This is an incredible opportunity to return to my home away from home," Shyiak said in the team's press release. "To start as a student-athlete in 1987 and come full circle to lead the hockey program as head coach is something for which I will forever be grateful."

As Shyiak gets sets to lead the Wildcats, it will be interesting to see how the team performs next season. Losing recruits hurts but the Wildcats should be poised to bounce back in the near future.
