Notre Dame defenseman Jake Boltmann entered the transfer portal Wednesday after parts of four seasons with the Fighting Irish.
The Edina, Minn., native was originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft but has yet to be signed. The Flames have until August 15th to sign him before his rights expire.
In a total of 126 NCAA games, Boltmann scored two goals and added 18 assists to go along with 108 penalty minutes after spending his junior career with the Lincoln Stars.
While the right-shot defenseman’s numbers don’t jump off the page, he could be a good get for a team looking for leadership and a steady presence on the backend.
Boltmann is a reliable defender who does not shy away from physicality, initiating contact in the defensive zone to separate players from the puck while making it difficult for players to establish positioning in front.
With the puck on his stick, he makes a good first pass as he identifies lanes as they open and can hit players in stride with an accurate stretch pass.
While his ceiling would most likely be that of a third-pairing defender at the NHL level, every team needs defensive depth and he could be a good candidate for the Flames to sign to see what they have in him.
