The Charlotte Checkers have signed Ohio State Buckeyes forward Riley Hughes to a one-year, two-way AHL contract, the team announced Monday.
Hughes, who played out his fifth year of eligiblity with the Buckeyes this past season, had one goal and four assists for five points in 23 games.
After finishing his season with the Buckeyes, Hughes briefly joined the Iowa Heartlanders of the ECHL where he had four points in 12 games.
Having spent the first four seasons of his NCAA career at Northeastern, the Massachusetts native collected 12 goals and 37 points in 141 career NCAA games.
While the Checkers were eliminated in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs recently, they consistently ice a solid team who contends for the playoffs every year.
While Hughes may not make the team straight out of camp, he could play his way into an early season call-up. With his size and decent ECHL production (albeit in a small sample size), Hughes is a solid bet for the Checkers to take.
